Overrated Indy 500 drivers: No. 1 – Helio Castroneves (Rank: 5th)

The Drive for Five is on for the four-time Indy 500 winner. Only two years removed from his historic fourth Indy 500 victory, there is no question that Helio Castroneves still has some racing left in the tank.

Unfortunately, the legend is not the fifth best driver in this year’s field, and his team, Meyer Shank Racing, aren’t helping to elevate him at this stage in his career. The Meyer Shank Racing cars have been consistently at the back of the field this year, despite having two of IndyCar’s best behind the wheel.

The team and Castroneves have had an abysmal start to the 2023 season, and there haven’t been any signs that things will turn around for the Indy 500. He has only finished one race inside the top 20 this season.

If the Meyer Shank Racing wagon can get through practice and qualifying without issues, Castroneves will have a chance to snag a decent starting position.

While Castroneves can by no means be ruled out, it will be a steep uphill battle for him to be in position to drink the milk for a record fifth time. The 2023 field is stacked, and there are a lot of cars that will be faster than No. 06 SiriusXM/AutoNation Honda. If there’s anyone who can make it happen though, it’s Helio Castroneves.
