Formula 1 drivers at risk: No. 2 – Zhou Guanyu

Zhou Guanyu made history becoming the first Chinese driver in Formula 1 history. Now in his second season in the sport, the Alfa Romeo driver is at risk of losing his seat going into 2024. His situation is interesting, as he has not exactly done poorly, but he has not been great either. He has been quite average.

Alfa Romeo have put out a mid-tier car, and the performance of Zhou and Valtteri Bottas has been relatively equal. But the Chinese driver’s contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the season, and amid the team finding their way with the upgrades to the C43, the hope is that their car will end up being more competitive next year.

With that in mind, they could be looking to attract a better driver as they aim to achieve a seventh place finish in the constructor standings.

Additionally, Alfa Romeo’s decision could be even more intriguing than usual. They could look in multiple directions for a new driver, given that they are now less than three years away from Audi taking control of the team.

They could look to the future by finding the face of their big project early, and unfortunately Zhou’s performance with the team has not warranted a new contract.
