Possible IndyCar McLaren drivers for 2024: No. 3 – Callum Ilott

Callum Ilott was known to be high on Chip Ganassi Racing’s list for potential replacements for Alex Palou last year when it was speculated that Palou would not be back for a third season behind the wheel of the No. 10 Honda, and that alone could give Arrow McLaren a reason to pursue his services, especially after Zak Brown recently fell to 0-2 in the Palou sweepstakes.

While Ilott was said to have signed a “multi-year” contract with Juncos Hollinger Racing during the 2022 season, which would presumably tie him down through at least 2024, the details and potential options in that contract were never publicized.

And we all know that if there is any team that would try to take advantage of a contract that is in any, way, shape, or form not completely watertight, it’s McLaren, which just about made it their goal last year to sign every young driver under the sun.

While he hasn’t finished in the top 10 since the season’s second race at Texas Motor Speedway, Ilott has made solid progress from his rookie season this year.

He finished in the top five in the season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg and led laps in the Indy 500 en route to a 12th place finish. He made up 15 spots from his 27th starting position, a starting position that many thought he wouldn’t achieve given the team’s issues during practice.

The 24-year-old Briton has potential to thrive at a competitive IndyCar team, and if Juncos Hollinger Racing can’t give him that opportunity, perhaps his future might lie elsewhere. If not next year, perhaps he is an ideal candidate for the fourth Arrow McLaren Chevrolet in 2025.
