IndyCar: The Worst 10 Wrecks In The DW12 Era
By Asher Fair
Pocono, 2016
Alexander Rossi was sent out of his pit stall as Charlie Kimball was coming into his pit stall, which was in front of Rossi’s. A slight tap between the tires of the two cars lifted the nose of Rossi’s car up into the air.
While the front of Rossi’s car was in the air, Helio Castroneves was being sent out of his pit stall. The front of Rossi’s car came down right square on the cockpit of Castroneves’ car as Castroneves turned out of his pit box.
All three drivers were okay following the accident, but this crash was one of the worst accidents in the pits that the Verizon IndyCar Series has ever seen.
Pocono, 2015
In qualifications, Charlie Kimball got loose in turn three and spun out in the middle of the turn. He spun over 180 degrees before hitting the barrier, which caused the front of his car to hit the barrier first.
On the impact, the rear of his car was also sent into the barrier. The car then began to lean into the barrier facing backwards before the rear of the car got off of the ground and into the catch fence, which caused the front of the car to be lifted up as well. This sent the car into a small spin before landing once again.
Kimball got out of the crash with just a cut on his chin and was able to race the following day. He even led one lap of the race despite starting in the back of the field.
