Each week, BeyondTheFlag.com will bring you the Power Rankings heading into the upcoming event on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Schedule. The results will be derived from both season-to-date performance as well as the finish order from the most recent event. Be sure to check back each week to see if your favorite driver made the list, and to let us know if you agree or disagree!
The Cup series now heads to Darlington Raceway for the Bojangles’ Southern 500. This year marks the return of this race to its long-held (and rightful, according to many legacy fans) Labor Day weekend date. The “Lady in Black” has been called “too tough to tame” by most drivers who have competed there at one time or another. If you thought the groove at Bristol was a bit on the high side, you haven’t seen anything yet! A “Darlington stripe” is a must-have badge of honor here.
Time is running out for those drivers needing a win to secure a Chase berth. The demanding physicality of this track, coupled with patience levels that are running low for those drivers needing a win and the South Carolina heat and humidity at this time of year promise to deliver another legendary event.
For this week’s rankings, I will list both the song that the driver chose for their pre-race introduction followed by my pick of song they should have chosen based on how their race played out. Be sure to let me know what you think!
