No. 5 – Bristol (2008)

Tough Break At The Bull Ring

It was all coming together for Tony Stewart with only five laps to go at Bristol Motor Speedway. The then two-time champion had led the most laps that afternoon, was leading with only five laps to go in the race and even got a beautiful jump on Denny Hamlin during what would have been the final restart of the race. Unfortunately for Stewart, it all went downhill from there.

Not only was Hamlin able to chase Stewart back down in the course of one lap and blow by him on the outside, Stewart was also now being tailed by a charging Kevin Harvick. Stewart battled side by side with Harvick for half a lap, but ultimately was hit in the quarter panel and spun bumper first into the wall.

While this is nowhere near the worst hit of Stewart’s career, it still deserves a certain amount of credence and a spot on this list given how close Stewart was to capturing the win that day. In fact, if Stewart and Harvick wouldn’t have caused that caution with three to go in the race, Stewart might have been able to out battle Harvick and pass Hamlin for the lead when he was having his fuel pump problem on the last lap.

Could of, would of, should of, but sadly couldn’t because he was taken out of the race by Harvick in the closing laps of the race.
