NASCAR returned in spectacular fashion at Daytona. Take a deeper look at some of the events that unfolded.

NASCAR racing made it’s long-awaited return on Sunday with the 58th running of the Daytona 500. With what could only be defined as “perfect” weather, the temperature hovered in the upper 60’s and and lower 70’s all afternoon. Partly cloudy skies and sunshine on the hot pavement was just an added bonus.

The race itself saw only one and two car wrecks, with “The Big One” staying away from the action. Notable drivers, such as Chase Elliott, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Danica Patrick and Greg Biffle were involved in accidents throughout the course of the race.

After a rather uneventful period of time between laps 100 and 170, the action heated up and we went on to see Denny Hamlin finish ahead of Martin Truex Jr. by 0.010 seconds, the closest finish in Daytona 500 history. Hamlin, a great restrictor plate driver, claimed his first win at Daytona.

That wasn’t the only first for the day either as Jeff Gordon enjoyed his first race in the FOX Sports booth with Mike Joy and Darrell Waltrip. Gordon provided the fans with some facts about what it was like to be in the driver’s seat at certain points in the race.

Overall, Feb. 21 was a great day for some racing. Let’s take a look at the winners and losers of the Daytona 500.
