Contender No. 2: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Stats at Martinsville:

  • Wins: 1
  • Top-5’s: 13
  • Top-10’s: 18
  • Laps Led: 972

Though Dale Earnhardt Jr. has had many great days at Martinsville, he didn’t capture his first win there until the fall of 2014.

Throughout his career at the paperclip, Earnhardt Jr. has finished in fourth place or better in ten races. Though he doesn’t have any poles and has led over 100 laps just four times in his 32 starts, it’s his consistency that has made him solid at Martinsville over the years.

Earnhardt Jr. will be looking to put together a complete race this weekend. He has seemed to have either great starts or great finishes to races but has struggled to find a formula that works for an entire event, which is why he continues to search for his first win of the season.

One thing he has done well, however, has been finding a way to get back into races as his performances at Las Vegas and Fontana could’ve ended a lot worse than 8th and 11th.

It’s important to realize that he had one of his best races at Phoenix, the only other short track the Cup Series has visited this year. With a win an two top-5 finishes in his last four races at Martinsville, there no doubt Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be a threat yet again.
