Contender No. 2: Denny Hamlin

Stats at Talladega:

  • Wins: 1
  • Top-5’s: 4
  • Top-10’s: 7
  • Laps Led: 227

Denny Hamlin’s most notable restrictor plate race came just recently as he scored one of the closest victories in NASCAR history over Martin Truex Jr. in the Daytona 500.

However, that’s small part of his success at plate tracks. Along with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Hamlin has to be considered one of the best plate racers in all of NASCAR. He’s proved it with his recent racing. Since 2014, Hamlin has won two plate races, one at Talladega and one at Daytona. He’s also finished five-straight races at Daytona in sixth place and above.

Like Keselowski, Hamlin got started early in the season but has not had much success since. Besides his Daytona 500 win, Hamlin has three top-10 finishes along with five finishes outside of 12th place. He’s also struggled to lead laps, as he’s led only 13 since leading 95 in the first race of the season.

This weekend presents Hamlin with an opportunity to run well at a track that suits his style of racing. Watch out for the No. 11 Fedex car on Sunday.
