Contender No. 2: Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Stats at Pocono:

  • Wins: 2
  • Top-5’s: 10
  • Top-10’s: 14
  • Laps Led: 178

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is no stranger to success at Pocono Raceway, but his two wins at the track have not come in dominant fashion.

Earnhardt Jr. swept Pocono in 2014 by leading just 11 laps in the first race and 14 in the second. He’s led laps totals of 22, 25, 21 and 36 but has never consistently ran out front in a race.

Right now, Earnhardt Jr. is still looking for his first win of the season. He’s had three second-place finishes (Atlanta, Texas, Bristol) but has not found Victory Lane yet in 2016. He’s even been struggling to lead laps, as Daytona and Phoenix are the only tracks where he’s been able to get out front.

Though Earnhardt Jr. has finished 13th or worse in his last five races, there’s reason to believe he can win this weekend, as he’s had eight top-10 finishes in his last ten races at Pocono. A win would be huge for him this weekend, and he’ll certainly have a car capable of getting it done.
