Sam Hornish Jr. went from substitute teacher to substitute driver to winner of the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway.

Seven months ago, Sam Hornish Jr. raced in his final race with Richard Petty Motorsports in the Sprint Cup Series at Homestead-Miami. One week ago, Sam Hornish Jr. was working as a substitute teacher in his hometown of Defiance, Ohio. But today, this former Indy 500 champion became a winner again in the Xfinity Series, winning the American Ethanol E15 250 at Iowa Speedway.

In a dominant performance, leading 183 of 250 laps at the 7/8-mile oval, Hornish drove in relief of Matt Tifft, who was scheduled to pull double duty this weekend at Iowa, if not for a disc injury that would sideline him. Ty Dillon would come home second, proving to be Hornish’s closest competitor in the second half of the race. Daniel Suarez, who started up front, led early and challenged Hornish in the opening half of the race, only to finish fourth. Wedged in between Dillon and Suarez would be Brad Keselowski in third.

Polesitter Erik Jones was snakebit all day, after being forced to the rear of the field for the start due to illegal body modifications. As he worked through the field, fuel cell issues would arise, causing the car to not pick up enough fuel. They would be forced into the garage to make repairs, and finished 27th. Of course, Jones was not the only one to start in the rear today, joined by Brendan Gaughan, Elliott Sadler, and Brad Keselowski for unapproved adjustments.
