NASCAR Checkered Countdown: Top-Five Indianapolis Finishes
No. 5 Jimmie Johnson holds off Mark Martin to win his third Brickyard 400 (2009).
Jimmie Johnson for sure knows how to win at Indy. His third victory came in 2009 after a race dominated by Juan Pablo Montoya. With 35 laps to go Montoya was penalized for speeding on pit-road and that left the Hendrick driver with the lead. Johnson would have to drive perfectly to get the win though since the pole-sitter Mark Martin quickly closed the gap between him and the leader and started applying a big pressure on him. Martin was able to get very close on the backstretch but always lost a little ground to Johnson in turns three and four. The two continued their nerve-wracking “Cold war” in the closing stages of the race but the leader never made the slightest mistake and was able to put his #48 Chevrolet in victory lane.
