2. Graham Rahal from IndyCar to NASCAR

With the NASCAR Xfinity Series adding a standalone race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2013, one native Ohioan is a leading candidate for a crossover ride. IndyCar driver Graham Rahal may not have as many wins as some of his open-wheel competitors, but his profile transcends the series and would have crossover appeal.

Rahal got put on the map early, becoming the youngest IndyCar winner in history shortly after the IRL’s merger with the former Champ Car World Series. Since then wins have come more selectively for the son of IndyCar legend Bobby Rahal, but he did contend for the championship in 2015. His Ohio connection makes him a prime candidate for that Xfinity event.

2016 would have been a great opportunity for Rahal to race there, with the unique wet conditions where former open-wheel and sports car drivers excelled. IndyCar also had their version of a summer break during that same period, but that may not remain intact if Gateway Motorsports Park is added to their schedule next year. Even if it doesn’t, IndyCar fans would likely tune in to see one of the legendary names of their series race in a stock car.
