Sebastian Vettel snapped a long winless streak at Monaco for Scuderia Ferrari on Sunday, further expanding his championship lead in the process.

In 2001, Formula One legend Michael Schumacher took Scuderia Ferrari to victory on the streets of Monte Carlo in Monaco. It has been sixteen years since that win, and sixteen years since the team won at the crowned jewel of the world championship. That winless streak was snapped on Sunday when Sebastian Vettel led the red dragons to victory lane once more.

The odds appeared in favor of Ferrari for most of the weekend, with Vettel’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen starting on pole for the race. Couple that with a Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas who were struggled for pace, and it was certainly the day for the Scuderia to pounce. After a play of some team strategy, Vettel easily coasted to victory in the first of the Memorial Day motorsports gems.

Kimi Raikkonen came home second on the day, after pit strategy saw Vettel stay out longer than the flying Finn, taking the lead from him. The move likely did not sit well with Raikkonen, but Scuderia Ferrari argued the need for focus on the championship than individual wins. Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo took the final podium spot in third.

Mercedes continued to struggle for pace on Sunday, with Valtteri Bottas only mustering a fourth-place finish. Meanwhile, former world champion Lewis Hamilton jumped forward from his 13th starting spot to finish seventh. Max Verstappen in the other Red Bull car finished out the top five.

The race ran green for most of the way until the finish closed in. A scary crash involving Jenson Button, running in a one-off sub for Fernando Alonso, and Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein led to a safety car period. Wehrlein, unfortunately, ended up sideways resting a tire barrier just before the tunnel. Marcus Ericsson, meanwhile, would crash out under that yellow period.
