The first standalone race of the 2017 NASCAR season belongs to the Camping World Truck Series, racing in the shadow of the Great Arch at Gateway Motorsports Park. A Saturday night special for the toughest truckers in America ended with young John Hunter Nemechek in victory lane in the Drivin’ for Linemen 200.
Nemechek, who started the night outside of the playoff grid for the Truck Series, earned his first win of the season after passing Matt Crafton on the final restart with less than 20 laps to go. It was the only caution for an incident on track all night that precipitated the caution, with Josh Reaume stalling out in the middle of pit road under green. Otherwise, the only cautions on the night were for the end of the stages.
A wide variety of strategies were employed by teams throughout the night, with little fall off from the Goodyear tires. On the final round of stops, a mix of no tires, two tires, and four tires were seen, with Matt Crafton and Chase Briscoe getting out front by not changing rubber. Briscoe would eventually pit again under yellow for four tires, and charge through the field to finish second.
The battle through the field for Briscoe, however, did have one casualty. On the final lap, the #29 truck made contact with Christopher Bell, cutting down one of this tires. This slid him from second to sixth in just one lap.
