In the final year of full-time racing for Dale Earnhardt Jr., perhaps there is no track where he has a better chance to win at than Daytona. The high banks of NASCAR’s home superspeedway have been home to many Earnhardt wins, both by Junior and his dad. He will now start on pole for Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400, an appropriate spot for what could be his final start there.
The driver of the #88 Chevy was the fastest in both rounds of Cup Series qualifying on Friday afternoon, making him the polesitter for the second time at the track. It is also his 14th pole of his career. His young teammate Chase Elliott will start alongside in second, with all four Hendrick Motorsports cars starting in the top 12.
The qualifying session was dominated by Chevrolet and Ford, with no Toyotas advancing to the final round of single-car runs. Matt Kenseth was the best qualified Toyota in 13th, while Brad Keselowski led the blue oval contingent in third.
