Mother Nature has a vendetta against night racing for the NASCAR Xfinity Series, delaying a second consecutive Friday night race for the #2 division. The Alsco 300 at Kentucky was set to be run one day prior, but the now Saturday afternoon race in the bluegrass state was won by a familiar face in Kyle Busch.
Busch, who holds a series-high 88 wins in his career, won on a strategy call where he stayed out on the final caution with just 30 laps to go. He was able to hold off teammate Erik Jones and a hard-charging Ryan Blaney for the win, despite older tires and low fuel. These three drivers controlled most of the 200-lap race on Saturday, with the trio combining to lead all but one lap.
The most exciting drive to watch was that of Blaney in the closing stages of the race, after he was penalized on pit road and forced to restart at the back. The driver of the #12 Ford was able to power through the field from 20th to 2nd at the time the checkered flag flew. In the end, Blaney and his Cup Series combatants made up the top 6 finishers for today’s race.
William Byron was the best finishing Xfinity Series regular in 7th, falling short of winning three consecutive races in just his rookie season. Justin Allgaier, Daniel Hemric and Tyler Reddick were the only other drivers racing for the championship to finish inside the top 10.
