When Formula One goes to Great Britain, everyone knows that the race runs through the Union Jack’s native son. Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix four times in its history, and added another win on Sunday at the Silverstone circuit to tie the record for most British GP wins of all-time.
Hamilton, who set a blistering pace in pole qualifying on Saturday, cruised away from the field on Sunday on the opening lap. Despite a safety car period slowing the field early after a collision between the Toro Rosso teammates, Hamilton remained unchallenged at the front and easily rolled away to victory. He now ties Jim Clark for the most British Grand Prix wins by a native Brit in F1 history.
Perhaps more important than the win on Sunday was the role Hamilton’s win played in the championship. He now trails Sebastian Vettel by a single point heading into Hungary, after Vettel was forced to pit late and finished 7th. Battling with Valtteri Bottas late in the race, Vettel developed a tire issue that ultimately forced him down the finishing order.
Valtteri Bottas came home in 2nd for yet another 1-2 finish for Mercedes AMG Petronas, with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen rounding out the podium spots. Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo for Red Bull Racing came home inside the top 5, while Nico Hulkenberg bounced back for Renault in 6th.
