New York City has never hosted a sanctioned auto race inside the city limits until this weekend. Formula E has become the first racing series to tackle the streets of the Big Apple, racing in the Red Hook district of Brooklyn. On Sunday, Sam Bird became the first driver to sweep a doubleheader weekend in 2017 for DS Virgin Racing.
Bird, who won the opening race of the weekend on Saturday, handled the field with grace on Sunday by winning by a wide margin over Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist. The two finished in the same order they qualified earlier in the day, with Bird surpassing Rosenqvist in the final round for the pole.
The race was fairly quiet for those out front, while others further back in the pack battled a race of attrition. Daniel Abt continued with his bad luck, losing power as well out of the second hairpin turn on the opening lap. Jaguar’s Mitch Evans was next to find trouble, losing power between turns 4 and 5. Alex Lynn and Maro Engel would also have trouble, failing to finish after having to abandon their first cars early.
