Ryan Sieg and Jeff Green, Chevrolet

#10

The top performing of the underfunded operations in the Xfinity Series, Ryan Sieg finds himself once again on the bubble of making the playoffs. The #39 team will have to dig deep and have a little bit of luck to fight off an even deeper field of cars this year if they are going to work their way into the playoff fight in Kentucky.

JGL Racing

Dakoda Armstrong and Dylan Lupton, Toyota

#9

Dakoda Armstrong is quietly becoming a consistent Xfinity Series regular, earning a top twenty finish on Saturday at New Hampshire. Perhaps where the soon-to-be 26-year-old shines most is in the standalone races without direct Cup Series competition. Fortunately, one of those races comes in two weeks in the return to Iowa, where he places in the top 5.

Kaulig Racing

Blake Koch, Chevrolet

#8

While they are effectively a sixth team for Richard Childress Racing, Kaulig Racing for our purposes remains its own entity. They perform well for a single-car operation, but clearly lean on their alliance with RCR for technical support and strong cars to race with. One has to wonder if Kaulig Racing will suffer more in the run up to the playoffs with at least one of the fully Childress-operated teams sitting outside of the top 12.

Roush Fenway Racing

Ryan Reed, Ford

#7

Roush Fenway Racing has quietly slipped since the departure of Darrell Wallace Jr. from the team due to lack of funding. Operating as one car may help consolidate resources and personnel around Ryan Reed’s team, but the performance on the track has not improved significantly. Reed has proven himself well on superspeedways, but if he wants to advance out of the first round of the playoffs, he needs to improve on shorter tracks.

Richard Childress Racing

Ben Kennedy, Ty Dillon, Daniel Hemric,

Brandon Jones, and Brendan Gaughan, Chevrolet

#6

Five teams, five different directions. Daniel Hemric remains the picture of consistency, while Brandon Jones is seeing his playoff hopes slipping through his fingers. Brendan Gaughan remains squarely on the bubble, and the #2 and #3 teams are contenders but not winners yet. With so many cars, could RCR be harming themselves more than they are helping?

Team Penske

Brad Keselowski, Ford

#5

Team Penske had been hungry for another Xfinity Series win on Saturday in New Hampshire, but problems in the pits bit them in the end. These are similar problems that plagued the #22 squad during their long winless drought before Pocono this year, and the team is hoping that this pattern does not return for another year.

Stewart-Haas Racing

Cole Custer, Ford

#4

A rookie team with a rookie driver and a rookie crew chief are comfortably inside the Xfinity Series playoffs. Now the question is, when will Cole Custer get his first series win? Many thought it would be at New Hampshire, where he has won in K&N and Trucks. His next best opportunity likely comes at Iowa in two weeks time.

Chip Ganassi Racing

Kyle Larson and Brennan Poole, Chevrolet

#3

Much like their performance in the Cup Series, Chip Ganassi Racing is always in contention for race wins on the Xfinity side too. Kyle Larson is taking advantage of the races he has in the series, while Brennan Poole is no longer driving like a rookie, competing and closing in on his first victory. It would surprise no one to see Poole advance far in the playoffs and pick up a win or two in 2017.

Joe Gibbs Racing

Kyle Busch, Ryan Preece, and Matt Tifft, Toyota

#2

By far the favorites to win the owners championship in the Xfinity Series, Joe Gibbs Racing continues to rack up the wins with their Cup Series drivers. But at what cost? Their lone championship driver Matt Tifft is the quiet driver that goes often unnoticed, far too often overshadowed by his big ego teammates. If the team continues the current trajectory, expect an early exit from the playoffs for the #19 Toyota.

Jr Motorsports

Elliott Sadler, William Byron, Michael Annett, and

Justin Allgaier, Chevrolet

#1

Could things be any better for JR Motorsports in 2017? They’ve already picked up three wins, two with William Byron and one with Justin Allgaier. Elliott Sadler leads the points standings with his teammates in 2nd and 3rd. And all four drivers will probably make the Xfinity Series playoffs. The next two goals – get Michael Annett to be a contender and get Elliott Sadler a win.
