In an ARCA race that had a little bit of everything, it was Dalton Sargeant who saved his best tires for last when he pounced on the field to win at Indianapolis.

More from ARCA

The ARCA Racing Series joins NASCAR in racing in the circle city of Indianapolis, Indiana. While the Cup and Xfinity Series will take their laps around the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the ARCA drivers took over Lucas Oil Raceway on Friday night. With lots of on-track craziness and a little help from Mother Nature, Dalton Sargeant took the win in the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200.

Sargeant, who won his second race for Cunningham Motorsports this season in ARCA, used pit strategy on the final caution period to conquer the competition. While many others took their four fresh tires earlier in the race, the #77 team saved theirs for the latest opportunity. That came when Mother Nature brought some showers to the track with just twenty laps to go, but abated to allow the race to be finished.

The race early looked like it belonged to Sargeant’s teammate, Austin Cindric. The full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver had the fastest lap in qualifying and led the opening quarter of the race, before unexpectedly losing power. He would later back his car into the wall near halfway, effectively ending his night.

A number of series regulars would take turns at the front, including Riley Herbst, Michael Self, Austin Theriault and Sheldon Creed. But at the end of the race, none of them could challenge Sargeant with fresh tires, who came from 13th to the front in just a handful of laps. He also eats into Austin Theriault’s championship lead ahead of their second race at Pocono.
