Xfinity Series Team Power Rankings After Indianapolis
By Alex Herbst
JR Motorsports continues their authoritative hold on the Xfinity Series after Indianapolis. Can anyone challenge them heading back to Iowa?
NOTE: The “Last rank” category includes each team’s ranking in the previous edition of the Xfinity Series team power rankings.
Not Ranked This Week:
- JD Motorsports
- B.J. McLeod Motorsports
- Harmon Racing
- MBM Racing
- SS-Green Light Racing
- Tri-Star Motorsports
- Means Racing
- King Autosport
- RSS Racing
- Shepherd Racing Ventures
GMS Racing
Ben Kennedy and Spencer Gallagher, Chevrolet
#10
Last Week: NR (+1)
Fielding a two-car effort as a first-year organization can be an extremely uphill battle. But on Saturday at Indy, GMS Racing earned a bit of a win with a strong performance from Ben Kennedy, who is playing two roles in one season with GMS and Richard Childress Racing. Spencer Gallagher just needs to continue to make strides.
JGL RACING
Dakoda Armstrong and Jeb Burton, Toyota
#9
Last Week: 9th (NC)
Both Jeb Burton and Dakoda Armstrong finishing in the top 20 at Indianapolis is a solid result for this small team. Jumping up to 9th in points for their full-time #28 entry also helps. But the team is capable of more and could have a top 10 run coming at Iowa next week.
KAULIG RACING
Blake Koch, Chevrolet
#8
Last Week: 8th (NC)
Quietly going about his business in 2017, Blake Koch put in another top 20 finish on Saturday at the Brickyard. However, his current performance this season would suggest he would be eliminated early in the quickly approaching playoffs. Expect the #11 team to make more noise at the coming road course races.
ROUSH FENWAY RACING
Ryan Reed, Ford
#7
Last Week: 7th (NC)
Ryan Reed turned in a solid performance in 6th today, coming home behind just three other Xfinity Series regulars. However, Reed remains only a true contender on the larger tracks like Indy, and will need to show improvement at Iowa next week to validate his ability to contend in the playoffs.
RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING
Paul Menard, Ty Dillon, Daniel Hemric,
Brandon Jones and Brendan Gaughan, Chevrolet
#6
Last Week: 6th (NC)
Four cars in the top 10 and all five finishing 13th or better is a really good day for the largest organization in the Xfinity Series. However, with five bullets in the chamber and no wins in 2017, RCR needs to start wondering what they need to do to get back to Victory Lane.
TEAM PENSKE
Joey Logano, Ford
#5
Last Week: 5th (NC)
Joey Logano was one of the most consistent Cup drivers in the Lilly Diabetes 250 on Saturday, coming home in 3rd. However, no time for the #22 Ford out front means Team Penske still has work to do to catch up to other Cup-affiliated teams, especially Joe Gibbs Racing.
STEWART-HAAS RACING
Cole Custer, Ford
#4
Last Week: 4th (NC)
Cole Custer brought home yet another top 5 finish for Stewart-Haas Racing, building even more momentum for the young #00 squad. Heading into another standalone race in Iowa, SHR and Custer will most definitely be in the conversation for the race win.
CHIP GANASSI RACING
Tyler Reddick and Brennan Poole, Chevrolet
#3
Last Week: 3rd (NC)
Despite Tyler Reddick getting caught up in an early accident with Ryan Sieg, it was Brennan Poole carrying the flag for Chip Ganassi Racing with a 7th place finish. Both Reddick and Poole have proven to be contenders for race wins, but need some help from their peers to cross that threshold.
JOE GIBBS RACING
Kyle Busch, Erik Jones and Matt Tifft, Toyota
#2
Last Week: 2nd (NC)
Kyle Busch looked like the driver to beat nearly halfway through the Xfinity Series race on Saturday. But then, an off strategy move by his crew chief cost him valuable positions near the end, leading to no Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas in the top 10. Perhaps Matt Tifft can step forward and lead a bounce back at Iowa.

JR MOTORSPORTS
Elliott Sadler, William Byron, Michael Annett and
Justin Allgaier, Chevrolet
#1
Last Week: 1st (NC)
The kings of the Xfinity Series cemented their throne, at least for now, on Saturday. William Byron won his third race as a rookie, while Elliott Sadler earned yet another top 5 finish. Justin Allgaier led laps before getting into trouble as well, but he could use a change of fortunes. Michael Annett, meanwhile, just needs a whiff of whatever is getting his teammates going.
