Two doubleheaders to finish off the 2016-17 Formula E season means lots of points are on the line for the championship combatants. With Sam Bird sweeping the races in New York two weeks ago and Sebastien Buemi seeing his points lead cut down, now was the time for the field to pounce. In the first of two races at Montreal, Lucas Di Grassi did just that.
Di Grassi, who started on pole for the race in Canada, took the checkered flag ahead of the Techeetah teammates and overtook Buemi at the top of the point standings with one race to go in the season. Buemi wrecked in practice earlier in the weekend, forcing him to a backup car and to replace his battery. This led to a ten-spot penalty in qualifying, and ultimately knocked him out of contention on Saturday.
Despite not being in the hunt for the victory, Buemi still put on a show for the fans in Montreal, racing from deep in the field up to 4th by the finish. This included a close battle with Lucas Di Grassi’s teammate Daniel Abt on pit lane, which led to some bump-and-run action on the way out.
Following Di Grassi home on Saturday was Jean-Eric Vergne in second and his Techeetah teammate Stephane Sarrazin in third. Buemi and Daniel Abt rounded out the top five at the finish.
