With no Cup Series drivers to spoil the fun, Ryan Preece took his first career Xfinity Series victory in his last race of 2017 with Joe Gibbs Racing at Iowa.

More from NASCAR

Standalone races are some of the most exciting races of the year for the NASCAR Xfinity Series, especially when racing in the cornfields of Iowa Speedway. No Cup Series drivers are racing to spoil the fun for the young guns hunting for victory, leading to a great chance of a first-time winner. And indeed, a first-time winner was crowned at Iowa on Saturday afternoon, as Ryan Preece drove to Victory Lane.

Preece, who was in his second of only two scheduled races with Joe Gibbs Racing in 2017, held off his equally hungry teammate Kyle Benjamin and Brian Scott in overtime for the win. It was the first win of Preece’s career in the Xfinity Series after running a full season last year with JD Motorsports. Now, Preece is back racing full-time in the Whelen Modified Tour, while pooling his resources for just two opportunities with JGR.

For a while in the final stage of the race, it looked as if Justin Allgaier may take his second win of 2017 for JR Motorsports. Unfortunately for his #7 team, a miscalculation on pit strategy cost him that chance, putting him two laps down in 20th. Overall, it was a day to forget mostly for JR Motorsports, which has been the dominant team on the season thus far.

Coming home behind Preece was fellow JGR driver Kyle Benjamin in second and RCR substitute Brian Scott in 3rd. Brennan Poole and Cole Custer rounded out the top 5. And the feel-good story of the day was JJ Yeley, who came home in 6th for the grieving TriStar Motorsports, after losing their team owner earlier this week.
