After Lucas Di Grassi won the opening half of the Montreal ePrix on Saturday, the championship battle was reversed. Sebastien Buemi, the hunted for the entire 2016-17 Formula E season, would become the hunter for the season finale of the all-electric championship. And with Jean-Eric Vergne winning on Sunday, he fell just short. Lucas Di Grassi has been crowned the third ever Formula E champion.
Di Grassi, who fell short of winning the title for the first two seasons after being the lead test driver for the series, can finally celebrate his hard work. Nelson Piquet Jr. and Sebastien Buemi both usurped him previously, but now the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team is on top of the electric racing world.
Lucas Di Grassi came home in seventh on Sunday, which was enough to secure his first-ever title. Buemi, his chief title combatant, came home in eleventh after struggling in qualifying once again that forced him deep in the pack. Ultimately, neither of the top two in points would be players in the race for the win.
The race itself saw several new faces at the front, with Felix Rosenqvist starting on pole. Mahindra Racing and DS Virgin Racing looked strong all day, with Rosenqvist, Nick Heidfeld, and Jose Maria Lopez contending for victory. But ultimately, the privateer Techeetah squad won out, with Jean-Eric Vergne taking the team to their first ever victory in Canada.
