Indianapolis, 2017

Finally, we have Kasey Kahne’s most recent NASCAR Cup Series victory, which was at Indianapolis in this season’s Brickyard 400. While most of the field did crash out of the race, the win was still impressive for Kahne, who started in 19th place, his worst starting position in the six races he has won for Hendrick Motorsports.

This ending of this race ended up being the last straw for NASCAR’s overtime line, which caused controversy when a wreck took place well before Kahne crossed the overtime line in the lead, yet officials waited to call the caution flag until he crossed the line so that the race could end, perhaps in an attempt to end the race before it became too dark.

As a result of this controversial call, Kahne held on to win the race, which took over six hours to complete. However, his win was certainly not tarnished in any way; after all, he had held the lead from the previous restart, so it’s not like the officials robbed someone else of the victory and gave it to Kahne. The win was the 18th of his Cup Series career and his sixth as a Hendrick Motorsports driver.

This win also ended Kahne’s 102-race win drought, which was the longest of his career and dated back to his previous win at Atlanta in 2014, which was discussed on the previous slide.
