Racing: Top 5 most exciting support series
By Alex Herbst
Sometimes the support series can put on the best show on a racing weekend. Here are just five of those divisions who put on some great events.
Racing fans are some of the most insatiable sports fans on the planet. Always craving more action, more excitement, and more activity on track, the racing fanatic often turns to lower divisions to fill their desire for fun. While the top-billed racing series will often steal the headlines, the support series do get their moments in the spotlight as well.
Whether it is through highlight shows on television or insane crashes that go viral online, support series have grown in size and stature with the advancement of technology. Once a forgotten part of the race weekend, only seen by fans at the track, these smaller developmental divisions have become a key cog in the television machine for motorsports. But why aren’t all fans embracing this expansion of racing coming through the airwaves?
Too often racing fans will focus on the big stories, the big stars, and the big series. Great racing happens around the United States and around the world on a weekly basis. From your local short track to the big winding road courses of the globe, racing is in a near constant open season. While other sports provide for offseasons, the racing fan does not need one, because no matter when or where they are watching, there is almost always action on the track.
Without the help of support series, most of these tracks would go silent when the big series pack up and leave town to travel to another track. These series are a key revenue stream for sponsors, teams, and drivers. They are also how many of the racing stars of tomorrow are developed and discovered.
These five series may be some of the most exciting racing divisions out there among the support series, but they even rival some of the on-track action of the bigger championships as well.
