NASCAR: Marco Andretti interested in Xfinity Series race
By Asher Fair
IndyCar’s Marco Andretti is interested in driving in a possible NASCAR Xfinity Series race for JR Motorsports, the top team in the series.
While on a flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco, California, two-time IndyCar race winner and 2006 Indianapolis 500 runner-up Marco Andretti, 30, posted on his Twitter account that he would be taking questions from fans.
One such question posed by a fan was whether or not Andretti ever saw himself driving in NASCAR, perhaps in the Xfinity Series for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team, JR Motorsports, which Earnhardt Jr. co-owns along with his sister Kelly Earnhardt Miller and Rick Hendrick, the team owner of Earnhardt Jr.’s Cup Series team, Hendrick Motorsports.
Here is the Tweet by Andretti that led up to the discussion about him potentially racing in the Xfinity Series at some point.
Right away, Andretti was asked a number of questions by fans. Just over an hour later, Andretti posted the following message.
It was to this Tweet that a reply message came from a fan who posed a question to Andretti about him considering driving a race in the Xfinity Series with JR Motorsports.
Back in April, Andretti talked about how giving NASCAR a chance would be fun.
"“I’ve talked to Smoke (Stewart) a little bit about it. I don’t think I should jump right to Cup. I think there’s probably some Xfinity stuff that could be a possibility. Smoke hates restrictor plate races to begin with, so he’s not very high on me wanting to do it. But I think if we could put something together it would be fun.”"

Plenty of drivers have driven in both NASCAR and IndyCar, but not many have had success in both. Danica Patrick is the only current full-time Cup Series driver who previously drove full-time in IndyCar, and she has not had any success in NASCAR whatsoever despite being a decent IndyCar driver.
James Davison, who has driven in three Indianapolis 500 races in the last four years, has driven in a few Xfinity Series road course races over the past two seasons and done a pretty solid job.
Four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti also attempted to make the switch to NASCAR but failed epically in doing so. However, Tony Stewart won the 1996-1997 IndyCar championship and is a three-time Cup Series champion, so he may have good advice for Andretti as far as racing in NASCAR goes, even if it is just for one race in the Xfinity Series.

Earlier this year, there was speculation that IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe may like to try the NASCAR Xfinity Series at some point. Could both he and Marco Andretti make an attempt in the series within the next year or two?
