The fact that Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton needed to apologize for his recent Instagram video is absurd.

Four-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton posted a lighthearted video on his Instagram account of his four-year-old nephew Kaiden in a princess dress holding a magic wand on Christmas Day.

Somehow, some way, the innocent actions that took place in this video, namely Hamilton’s innocent remarks, ended up being the reason that he ended up having to apologize over this situation ever occurring.

Really.

Hamilton started the video by addressing his followers. Here is what he said, according to the BBC:

"“I’m so sad right now. Look at my nephew.”"

Hamilton then filmed his nephew wearing the dress and holding the wand. He then joked with the boy and asked him a few questions, according to the BBC:

"“Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas? Why did you ask for a princess dress for Christmas? Boys don’t wear princess dresses!”"

That set off the Twitter trolls. These trolls, whose lone goal in life I am convinced is to post rude attention-seeking comments on the accounts of famous people to make themselves feel good, did what they do best and tore into Hamilton for whatever reason.

This reason happened to be the fact that they believed Hamilton humiliated the kid by making “stereotypes” based on his gender. But the trolls ignored one key thing: THE KID HIMSELF WAS LAUGHING! And what four-year-old boy wouldn’t be?

These trolls, many of whom claim to be offended by Hamilton’s “offensive” remarks because he is making “stereotypes” based on gender are also making their own assumptions — they’re attaching sexuality to Hamilton’s four-year-old nephew who is literally playing with his toys and making the assumption that he isn’t straight. This is perhaps the only thing about this situation that deserves any negative attention..

Plus, I’m pretty sure if that were the case, Hamilton would have known this about his nephew and not been inclined to joke about it — anyone who knows him knows he truly is a humble character who respects people. But let’s not forget the fact that the kid is four years old…four years old! Is he not allowed to dress up and have fun with his uncle without people judging his uncle’s innocent humor about the situation and turning into a sexuality issue?

The fact that Hamilton needed to apologize to people who want to attach sexuality to a four-year-old playing is beyond belief. They should be the ones apologizing, not Hamilton. If his joke was even remotely offensive, the kid would not have been laughing about it and enjoying his time messing around with his uncle. It’s a disgrace that Hamilton has taken any kind of heat for this.

Here is Hamilton’s apology.

Was Lewis Hamilton’s apology for his video appropriate for the situation, or did people simply overreact, which has become all too common in this day and age? Hopefully the situation has come to a close, although there are no guarantees.
