NASCAR: Cody Coughlin joins GMS Racing for 2018 season
By Alex Herbst
Cody Coughlin will switch allegiances for the 2018 season, moving to GMS Racing and Chevrolet after his first full season with ThorSport Racing in 2017.
More of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series field is coming into view just one month away from Daytona. The multi-truck operations are now beginning to solidify their drivers, including former championship-winning team GMS Racing. Their operation fielded three full-time drivers in 2017, but they will add one more to the stable this year. Cody Coughlin will join GMS Racing to run for the title.
Coughlin, who drove for ThorSport Racing in 2017 in what was his first full-time campaign, will drive the #2 JEGS Chevrolet for GMS in his sophomore year. Prior to 2017, Coughlin drove a handful of races for Kyle Busch Motorsports and Venturini Motorsports. This will also mark his move from the Toyota camp back to Chevrolet for the first time since 2013.
Cody Coughlin had this to say about jumping from ThorSport Racing to GMS Racing for the 2018 season, according to ESPN:
"I couldn’t be more excited to join the GMS Racing family, as well as be back running for Chevrolet. GMS is a team that has proven to be one of the teams to beat every time they unload at the race track and now I have the same opportunity. I can’t thank GMS Racing, Maury Gallagher and Mike Beam enough for this chance. I think we have the right tools and personnel in place with the No.2 team to run up front and contend for race wins every weekend."

The #2 team will serve as the expansion operation for GMS in 2018, after fielding three trucks full-time in 2017. Two of those drivers, Johnny Sauter and Justin Haley, will return to the #21 and #24 Chevrolets, respectively. The third team will be renumbered from #33 to #25 and field Dalton Sargeant for his rookie campaign.
Coughlin’s team will be led by veteran crew chief Jerry Baxter, who was previously partnered with Kaz Grala. Baxter had this to say about the new opportunity:
"I’m more than ready to get the 2018 season underway. Last year we raced against Cody every weekend, so I have an idea of the type of driver he is. It will be even better to be able to work with him now firsthand. We have a good group of hard-working guys on the No. 2 that will definitely put us in the position to run well every time we’re at the track."
