There is a chance that the layout of the Circuit de Monaco, the site of the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1, could change in the future.

The Monaco Grand Prix is the crown jewel on the Formula 1 calendar. The race, which is held at the Circuit de Monaco, a 19-turn, 3.337-kilometer (2.074-mile) temporary street circuit in Monte Carlo, Monaco, made its debut way back in 1929.

The race has been contested a total of 75 times, with the most recent Monaco Grand Prix having taken place last year on Memorial Day Sunday, which is the traditional day for the race ahead of IndyCar’s Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway later that day in the United States of America.

As referenced above, the race was introduced to the Formula 1 schedule in 1929. However, after being held nine years in a row starting in 1929, the race was held just three times from 1938 to 1954. In every year since 1954, however, the race has been held.

This year’s running of the race is set to take place on Sunday, May 27th. The race is the sixth of 21 on the 2018 Formula 1 schedule, and it is set to be broadcast live starting at 9:10 am ET on ABC on that date.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel won the race last year for the second time in his career, as he also won it back in 2011 when he drove for Red Bull Racing. In doing so, he gave Ferrari their first win in the world-renowned event since Michael Schumacher roared to victory at the track way back in 2001.

However, the track layout on which Vettel won the Monaco Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco may be experiencing some major changes in the future, according to Prince Albert II of Monaco. That said, nothing is confirmed at this point, and a change would likely not take place until 2025.

Here is what Prince Albert had to say about the matter, according to WTF1.

"“We always look, every once in a while, at different possibilities of extending the track, and certainly something to think about is that we are building the new land extension. There are no plans or anything yet, it is just in the back of all of our minds – people in the Automobile Club but also in the government – that there could be.“I am not saying that it will happen necessarily, but at some point we are going to put our minds together and say, how can we not only improve this, but how can we make it a little more exciting by maybe changing the course slightly?”"
