Last weekend at the Food City 500, Gaunt Brothers Racing had the Humboldt Jr. A Hockey team’s logo on the hood, which was auctioned off and raised $12,000.

Prior to the Food City 500 NASCAR Cup Series race last week at Bristol Motor Speedway, Gaunt Brothers Racing announced that driver D.J. Kennington would be driving with the logo of the Humboldt Jr. A Broncos hockey team on his hood.

The Cup Series and Gaunt Brothers Racing have something to be very proud of following the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway last weekend. The hood of the #96 car driven by Canadian driver D.J. Kennington was auctioned off to help support the family members of the 16 lives lost in the horrific bus accident involving the Humboldt Broncos Jr. A hockey team on April 6th.

The auction ended yesterday with the winning bid being reported by the Gaunt Brothers Racing team’s Facebook page of $12,000. Castrol Canada was the highest bidder, and they plan on donating the hood of the car to the Humboldt Broncos Jr. A hockey team.

Shortly after the accident was reported, a Go Fund Me page was created, and it raised over $15 million dollars before the page was closed.

Congrats to highest bidder Castrol Canada. They want to donate the hood to the Humboldt Broncos Jr 'A' Hockey Club. #PrayersForHumboldt

NASCAR Public Relations writer Tim Southers spoke with Kennington, who had this to say about the tragedy, via Motorsport.com.

"“We all realize money is not going to bring these kids back, but hopefully these donations will help the families deal with the tragedy the best they can and help that community. I get chills just talking about this right now because it’s just terrible thinking what these families are going through and I hope no other families ever have to go through this again.“Any little thing we can do to show support and try and help the families who need it, I’m proud to do anything I can right now to help.”"

The Gaunt Brothers Racing team and driver D.J. Kennington did a great thing to help our neighbors to the north during this time of grief. Although $12,000 seems small compared to the $15 million raised, every little bit will help the team and families in some way. One of my favorite parts of NASCAR is how they step up in the time of need.

Although ice hockey and NASCAR are two very different sports, both require a great deal of travel in order to compete. What happened to the Humboldt Jr. A Broncos hockey team is an absolute tragedy and I for one couldn’t be happier about seeing Gaunt Brothers Racing step in and do their part to help.
