NASCAR Cup Series: Looking back at the last five Dover races

The 11th race of the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season is set to take place at Dover International Speedway. Let’s look back at the last five races at the track.

The AAA 400 Drive for Autism is the 11th race on the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, and it is set to take place later today at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware. The race is scheduled to start shortly after the live broadcast of it begins on Fox Sports 1 at 2:00 pm ET, but it may end up being postponed due to rain.

This visit to Dover International Speedway is the first of the usual two this season for the Cup Series, with the other coming in October as the first race of the round of 12 of the 2018 Cup Series playoffs.

Before the 2018 AAA 400 Drive for Autism, let’s look back at what has happened in the last five races at Dover International Speedway, which have featured five different winners.

October 2015

Kevin Harvick started the race in 15th place, but he ended up dominating it. He won the race after leading 355 of its 400 laps. He won the race by 2.639 seconds over Kyle Busch in second. Race polesitter Matt Kenseth finished in seventh after leading only 26 laps. The race featured 14 lead changes among three different drivers and eight caution flag periods for 43 laps.

May 2016

Matt Kenseth started the race in 10th place before going on to win it despite the fact that he did not dominate the race, as he led just 48 of its 400 laps. He won the race by 0.187 seconds over Kyle Larson in second. In fact, there was really no dominant driver. Race polesitter Kevin Harvick led the most laps out of anybody in the field with 117 laps led en route to a 15th place finish. The race featured 19 lead changes among 10 different drivers and 12 caution flag periods for 65 laps.

October 2016

Martin Truex Jr. started the race in second place and led almost half of it, 187 of its 400 laps, en route to the victory. He won the race handily, as second place finisher Kyle Busch finished 7.527 seconds behind Truex Jr. Race polesitter Brad Keselowski finished in fourth after leading only seven laps. The race featured 14 lead changes among six different drivers and four caution flag periods for 22 laps.

June 2017

Jimmie Johnson started the race in 14th place, although he was sent to the rear of the field  at the start of it, but he managed to work his way through the field and win in overtime despite the fact that he only led seven of the race’s 406 laps. Kyle Larson, who dominated the race by leading 241 laps, finished in second. Race polesitter Kyle Busch finished in 16th after leading only 19 laps. The race featured 17 lead changes among nine different drivers and 15 caution flag periods for 72 laps.

October 2017

Kyle Busch started the race in second place before going on to win it despite the fact that he only led 30 of its 400 laps. A late pass on Chase Elliott, who led the most laps with 138 laps led and ended up finishing in second, gave Busch the 0.357-second victory. Race polesitter Martin Truex Jr. finished in fourth after leading only 51 laps. The race featured 15 lead changes among six different drivers and four caution flag periods for 24 laps.
