Kyle Larson

While he will not be attempting the Memorial Day Double this year despite the fact that he has expressed a lot of interest in doing so in the past, even to potentially do so as early as last season, Kyle Larson remains the driver who is most likely to attempt the historic feat and he is the driver who should consider it more than anyone.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

Larson can drive pretty much anything with wheels. While he is a full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver, he especially likes and excels at racing on dirt tracks. He drives for Chip Ganassi Racing in the Cup Series, and Chip Ganassi Racing are one of only two teams, the other being Team Penske, as discussed on the previous slide about Ryan Blaney, with full-time teams in both the Cup Series and in IndyCar, so a Memorial Day Double attempt for him is certainly not too far-fetched.

There is no doubt that Larson would be able to adapt to driving an IndyCar after testing and taking a bunch of practice laps around Indianapolis Motor Speedway, especially since he has done well at the track in the Cup Series with three top eight finishes in four races.

Having the ability to drive in both races for one team would also be a great advantage for him as he continues to gain experience, consistency and victories in the Cup Series having just finished in the top nine in the championship standings in back to back seasons while adding five career wins to his name over the course of those two seasons.

An Indy 500 attempt for Larson with Chip Ganassi Racing would not be as big of a change as it would be if he were to drive for another team. Here is what he had to say about the matter back in July of 2017, according to IndyCar.com.

"“I definitely think Chip would do it. I think they’re all waiting on me, at this point, to say I want to do it. I do. But when I see Scott Dixon and Bourdais crash, it makes me think twice about it a little bit. I’ll get the courage up to do it someday, maybe next year or the year after. I want to do it at the right time. “I’ve got great teammates at Chip Ganassi Racing that I can lean on. Scott Dixon is the best in racing. I can always talk to him. I’d be more curious to talk to Kurt Busch because he’s got my background and did an awesome job at Indy. If I ever did it, if I ever did get the chance, I’d talk to Kurt, for sure.”"
