NASCAR Cup Series: Will Kyle Larson win his fourth consecutive Michigan race?
By Asher Fair
Kyle Larson has won the last three NASCAR Cup Series races at Michigan International Speedway. Will he win his fourth straight this weekend?
The first of two trips to Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan on the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series schedule is set to take place this Sunday, June 10th with the FireKeepers Casino 400.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson has won each of the last three races at the the 2.0-mile D-shaped oval in his #42 Chevrolet. In fact, these three wins account for 60% of his career Cup Series win total of five.
Will the 26-year-old Larson be able to win his fourth consecutive race at Michigan International Speedway this week?

The last time Larson did not win a race at Michigan International Speedway, Barack Obama was still the President of the United States and Donald Trump had not even yet officially won the Republican presidential nomination, much less won the 2016 Presidential Election itself.
The most recent Michigan race that was not won by Larson was held in June of 2016, and it was won by Joey Logano in his #22 Ford for Team Penske. Larson finished in 3rd place behind Logano and Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott in 2nd.
In August of 2016, Larson began his three-race winning streak at Michigan by winning his first career Cup Series race. He held off Elliott in 2nd place by 1.478 seconds after starting from 12th place and leading 41 of the race’s 200 laps en route to this victory.
In June of 2017, Larson won his second race in a row at Michigan and his third race in a row at a 2.0-mile oval, as he also won at the 2.0-mile Auto Club Speedway oval in Fontana, California earlier in the season. Larson won this Michigan race from the pole position after leading 96 of its 200 laps and holding off Elliott in 2nd place by 0.993 seconds yet again.
In August of 2017, it appeared as though Larson’s winning streaks of two at Michigan and three on 2.0-mile oval tracks would come to an end. He didn’t seem to have the speed he needed throughout the weekend to get to the front and stay there. In fact, he led zero of the race’s first 200 laps.
However, the race, which was initially scheduled to last 200 laps, went to overtime, and Larson ended up making a bold move to take the lead from Martin Truex Jr. on the final restart before going on to lead the final two laps of the 202-lap race and winning it. He held off Truex Jr. by just 0.310 seconds to claim his third straight win at Michigan and fourth straight win on 2.0-mile oval tracks.
Because of the fact that he finished in 2nd place at Auto Club Speedway earlier this season in March, Larson’s streak of four straight victories on 2.0-mile ova tracks did come to an end. However, he still has a chance to extend his winning streak at Michigan International Speedway to four this weekend.
