Red Bull Racing have made their decision in regard to their engine manufacturer in the 2019 Formula 1 season. Here is what they have decided.

Since arriving in Formula 1 in the 2005 season, Red Bull Racing have used three different engine manufactures to supply engines for their cars. In the 2005 season, they used Cosworth engines, and in the 2006 season, they used Ferrari engines. From the 2007 season up until now, the team have used Renault engines. This season is their 12th season doing so.

However, Scuderia Toro Rosso, the Red Bull Racing junior team, switched from Renault engines to Honda engines this past offseason, and McLaren switched from Honda engines to Renault engines, thus keeping Renault at their three-team limit, as the factory Renault team, Renault Sport, also naturally use Renault engines.

Toro Rosso had previously used Cosworth engines in their first season in the sport, the 2006 season, Ferrari engines from the 2007 season to the 2013 season, Renault engines in the 2014 season and the 2015 season, Ferrari engines again in the 2016 season and Renault engines again last season. They had never used Honda engines.

After they made the switch from Renault engines to Honda engines before the start of this season, there was speculation that Red Bull Racing would do the same thing ahead of the 2019 season.

That ongoing speculation ended earlier today with confirmation that Red Bull Racing will indeed be switching to Honda engines in the 2019 season, thus leaving Renault and McLaren as the only two Renault-powered teams in the sport and thus joining Toro Rosso as the second Honda-powered team. In doing so, they will end their 12-year relationship with Renault.

The team have not yet officially announced this decision, but external parties were informed of their decision on Monday night. It is believed that the team could make the official announcement in regard to their switch to Honda engines before this Sunday’s French Grand Prix at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, Var, France despite the fact that they had initially not planned to make the official announcement in regard to their 2019 engine decision until the Austrian Grand Prix, which is set to be held at the Red Bull Racing in Spielberg, Austria on Sunday, July 1.

When will Red Bull Racing make an official announcement in regard to their switch to Honda engines? Will they  succeed in the 2019 Formula 1 season by using Honda engines as opposed to Renault engines?

Given the fact that they had data from Toro Rosso’s first seven races of the 2018 season, their first seven races using Honda engines, to use in order to make this decision, this engine switch may not end up being as disastrous as a lot of people believe that it will be if it is indeed confirmed like it is expected to be in the very near future.
