Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen won his first race of the 2018 Formula 1 season in the Austrian Grand Prix, the season’s ninth race.

Before today, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen had not won a Formula 1 race since he won last season’s Mexican Grand Prix. That changed in the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix.

Verstappen started the 71-lap Austrian Grand Prix around the 10-turn, 2.683-mile (4.318-kilometer) Red Bull Ring road course in Spielberg, Styria, Austria in fourth place, and he went on to win it by 1.504 seconds over Scuderia Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen in second for his fourth career Formula 1 victory and Red Bull Racing’s first victory at the Red Bull Ring.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finished in third place just 3.181 seconds behind Verstappen and was the final driver to finish on the lead lap. He retook the lead in the driver standings by one point over Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton.

Haas teammates Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen finished the race in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The double top five result was the best result ever for the third-year team Formula 1’s lone American team.

Grosjean had not scored any points since he did so in the 2017 Japanese Grand Prix, which was 14 races ago. He finished that race in ninth place. His fourth place finish in the Austrian Grand Prix is his best finish driving for Haas, and it is his best finish since he finished in third place in the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix when he drove for Lotus.

After a virtual safety car period began following the retirement of race Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes, which took place as a result of a hydraulics issue on lap 14, Verstappen, who was running in second place at the time, led a group of cars into the pits. Meanwhile, race leader Lewis Hamilton, who took the lead from Bottas the start of the race after starting in second, stayed out.

That came back to bite him. Hamilton ended up pitting under green flag conditions on lap 26, and Verstappen took the lead at that time in the race’s second and final lead change. Hamilton fell to fourth place.

Verstappen led the race’s final 46 laps after Hamilton led the first 25. Despite the fact that Bottas started the race from the pole position, he did not lead any of its laps.

Renault Sport’s Nico Hulkenberg was also forced to retire on lap 12 with an engine failure. Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo was forced to retire on lap 54 with a gearbox failure, and Hamilton was forced to retire on lap 63 with a fuel pressure issue.

Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Brandon Hartley and McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne were also forced to retire on lap 55 and lap 66, respectively, with gearbox issues.
