Formula 1 is considering a new points system that would award points to all 20 of the drivers who compete in each race as opposed to just 10 of them.
Formula 1 is reportedly considering overhauling the current points system with a new points system that awards points to 15 of the 20 drivers in the field or possibly even all 20 drivers in the field.
Right now, the sport’s points system awards points to only the drivers who finish races in the top 10 and thus only the constructors that have drivers finish in the top 10, meaning half of the drivers in the field score points and half of them don’t.
Here is what Sahara Force India team co-owner Vijay Mallya had to say about the talks that have gone on regarding the matter of a potential points system overhaul, according to WTF1.
"“They’re considering whether the points system should go all the way down to 20. With 20 being every car scores a point if they finish the race. The bottom starts with one point and then goes up. Or whether 10 should be extended down to 15. All these discussions took place.”"
Here is the current points system, which was implemented back in the 2010 season and has been used ever since.
Position | Points |
1 | 25 (-) |
2 | 18 (-7) |
3 | 15 (-10) |
4 | 12 (-13) |
5 | 10 (-15) |
6 | 8 (-17) |
7 | 6 (-19) |
8 | 4 (-21) |
9 | 2 (-23) |
10 | 1 (-24) |

The current points system rewards drivers for recording good finishes, but in doing so, it does not reward any driver who doesn’t record a good finish. As a result, the driver who finishes in 11th place scores the same number of points, zero, as the driver who finishes in 20th.
Is this something that Formula 1 wants to continue to be the case? That is something that will need to be considered when a future decision is made, but it is also something that has always been the case in the sport. In fact, only since 2010 have 10 drivers been given points, as previous points systems utilized by the sport have only awarded points to the top five, six and eight drivers.
