NASCAR Cup Series: Kevin Harvick dominates 2018 Consumers Energy 400

Kevin Harvick earned his seventh victory of the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season by winning the Go Consumers Energy 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag in the 23rd race of the 36-race 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Consumers Energy 400, at Michigan International Speedway after the starting the race in third place. The win is his seventh victory of the season.

Harvick won the 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) Michigan International Speedway oval in Brooklyn, Michigan in his #4 Ford by 3.233 seconds over second place finisher Brad Keselowski of Team Penske in his #2 Ford.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch was the highest finishing Toyota driver of the race. He finished in third place in his #18 Toyota. Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver of the race. He finished in fourth in his #3 Chevrolet, but he was slated for a second place finish before one of his tires went flat with just over one lap to go. His fourth place finish is his best since he won the season opener, the Daytona 500.

Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five in fifth place in his #12 Ford. Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Kurt Busch and Aric Almirola, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, the race polesitter, Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott and Team Penske’s Joey Logano rounded out the top 10 in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th in their #41 Ford, #10 Ford, #11 Toyota, #9 Chevrolet and #22 Ford, respectively.

The race featured a total of 15 lead changes among nine drivers. Aside of Harvick, who led more laps of the race than anybody else in the field with 108 laps led, eight other drivers led at least one lap of the race. Those drivers were Busch, Dillon, Hamlin, Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Newman, Jamie McMurray and Jimmie Johnson. Harvick won stages one and two of the race.

The race also featured a total of eight caution flag periods for laps. Two of those caution flag periods took place as a result of the endings of stages one and two and one was a competition caution that took place during stage one as a result of the fact that the track had been rained on, while the other five caution flag periods took place as a result of on-track incidents.

A total of 40 drivers  started the race. Of those 40 drivers, 34 finished the race, and of the 34 drivers who finished it, 21 finished it on the lead lap.
