Martin Truex Jr. – Martin Truex Jr. Rookie Car

It’s rare that a sponsor follows a driver for the majority of his NASCAR Cup Series career. It’s even rarer when that sponsor leaves and then comes back years later. Then again, Martin Truex Jr. has had an atypical career.

Truex Jr. has had quite the adventure through his career. He went from a promising young gun to a bust to an afterthought to a Cup Series champion. His career has come full-circle, as he is now seeing consistent success driving a Bass Pro Shops car like he did in his first few seasons in the sport.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

When Truex Jr.’s crew chief, Cole Pearn, explained that the car’s paint scheme was a throwback to the team’s Fontana design from earlier this year, it was clear that the sponsor fell down in the retro area this year. Most teams had some kind of throwback out on the track, but Truex’s Jr. car was notably an outlier this time around.

I think the team missed a big opportunity to honor Truex Jr.’s career. The design Truex Jr. used in his rookie season would have been a great choice. It featured a simple black design with a few stripes, but it carried Truex Jr. through his early years at Dale Earnhardt, Inc.

The reigning NASCAR champion deserves some kind of accolade to his now distinguished career.

So, there are  the top 10 paint schemes I would love to see run at Darlington Raceway in a future Southern 500. Some of them are definitely possible, while others are a bit far-fetched. Do you think any of my suggestions are worthwhile? Which paint schemes do you think deserve to be honored in the future? Do your part by writing your own article and maybe some NASCAR team, somewhere will hear your cry for help.
