Brendon Hartley

Brendon Hartley is in his first full season driving for Toro Rosso after driving in the final four races of the 2017 season for the team last year as the replacement for Carlos Sainz Jr. While he has not been impressive whatsoever this year, there is still a chance that he will return in 2019.

More from Formula One

Through the first 14 races of this season and the first 18 races of his Formula 1 career, the 28-year-old Kiwi has scored just two points. He earned one of these two points as a result of his 10th place finish in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and he earned the other one as a result of his 10th place finish in the German Grand Prix. He currently sits in 19th in the driver standings.

Among the career-high finishes of active drivers, Hartley’s career-high finish of 10th place is tied for the worst. Only Williams Martini Racing’s Sergey Sirotkin, a pay driver, has a career-high finish as bad as Hartley does, as the 23-year-old Russian finished in a career-high 10th in the Italian Grand Prix.

Relative to teammate Pierre Gasly, Hartley has been blown away. Gasly has secured 28 points on four top nine finishes so far this year, including a career-high fourth place finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix and two other top seven finishes, a sixth place finish in the Monaco Grand Prix and a seventh place finish in the Hungarian Grand Prix. He also finished in ninth in the Belgian Grand Prix.

That said, with Gasly set to leave Toro Rosso for Red Bull Racing in 2019 and with signing Lando Norris no longer being an option for the Italian team, there is a sizable chance that they could give Hartley another chance by re-signing him for what would be his second full season driving for the team.
