Justin Allgaier (continued)

While it would make sense for Justin Allgaier to drive for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series considering the fact that team owner Rick Hendrick also co-owns JR Motorsports, all four of their drivers are set to return to the team through at least next season.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

Chase Elliott has signed with the team through the 2022 season, Jimmie Johnson and Alex Bowman have signed with the team through the 2020 season, and rookie William Byron has signed with the team through at least next season.

But with Jamie McMurray set to leave Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of the 2018 season, the seat of the #1 Chevrolet will be open. While the team haven’t won a race yet this year, they have generally fielded competitive cars, and they should improve next season as a result of the fact that next season is set to be the second season during which the Chevrolet teams use the new Camaro ZL1, which they have struggled to get a handle on so far this year.

With Allgaier having only driven for Chevrolet teams in both the Xfinity Series and Cup Series since the 2011 season, him replacing the 42-year-old Joplin, Missouri native next year would make a lot of sense on his part, and it would make a lot of sense on Chip Ganassi Racing’s part to sign him given the success that he has had so far in the 2018 season.
