Fernando Alonso has been penalized following the penultimate race of the 2018 Formula 1 season, the Brazilian Grand Prix, at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso finished the penultimate race of the 21-race 2018 Formula 1 season and the penultimate race of his Formula 1 career, the Brazilian Grand Prix, at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in a disappointing 16th place. He finished the race two laps off the lead lap.
However, this result got even more disappointing for the two-time Formula 1 champion following the conclusion of the 71-lap race around the 15-turn, 2.677-mile (4.309-kilometer) Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace road course in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The 37-year-old Spaniard was penalized for ignoring blue flags during the race. The penalty that he was given was a five-second time penalty, which demoted him from a disappointing 16th place finish to a disappointing 17th place finish.

Because of the fact that he did not finish the race in the top 10 (or, quite frankly, anywhere near it), this penalty did not cost Alonso any points. He still sits in 10th place in the driver standings with 50 points heading into the season finale, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The driver who originally finished the race in 17th place but was promoted ahead of Alonso as a result of Alonso’s penalty was Williams Martini Racing’s Sergey Sirotkin. Sirotkin ended up finishing in 16th. He also finished two laps off the lead lap.
While Sirotkin gained one position as a result of Hamilton’s penalty, the fact that he did not end up finishing in the top 10 meant that he did not gain any points as a result of it. He still sits in 20th (last) place in the standings with one point so far in his rookie season.
Be sure to tune in to ESPN2 at 8:10 a.m. ET on Sunday, November 25 for the live broadcast of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is set to be Fernando Alonso’s final Formula 1 race before he retires. This race is set to be broadcast live from Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
