Formulated rankings predictions for after next race

Because of the fact that the Ford EcoBoost 400 was the final race of the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, this article does not include formulated NASCAR Cup Series Driver Power Rankings predictions for after the next race.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that Joey Logano won this year’s NASCAR Cup Series championship, he did not end up sitting atop the season’s final set of formulated NASCAR Cup Series Driver Power Rankings. He did not even move up from the fourth position following the Ford EcoBoost 400.

In fact, none of the four Championship 4 drivers, who all entered the season finale in the top four in the formulated NASCAR Cup Series Driver Power Rankings, shifted positions in these rankings as a result of this race.

The way it turned out, Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, who finished the race in first, second, third and fourth place, respectively, ended up being ranked in reverse order by being ranked in fourth, third, second and first, respectively, in these rankings.

A huge reason why this was the case is the way that the average finishes of these four drivers in the last five races compare to each other’s. Busch’s average finish in the last five races was the best among the four drivers at 5.60 while Harvick’s was the second best at 6.20, Truex Jr.’s was the second worst at 6.60 and Logano’s was the worst at 10.00.

That said, Logano’s average finish in the last five races was drastically worsened by one poor result, his 37th place finish in the round of 8 finale at ISM Raceway, a race that had no affect on his championship eligibility since he had already clinched a berth in the Championship 4 by winning the round of 8 race at Martinsville Speedway. His average finish in the other four of the last five races was an impressive 3.25. He won two of those four races and finished in third place in one of the other two.
