5. Easier for new entrants

More from Formula One

New entrants in Formula 1 have struggled to make ends meet and keep their teams running, although some of them have had a little bit of success. A number of teams have failed to maintain steady budgets and have ultimately shut down or sold the team. Marussia, HRT, Lotus and Force India are among the teams that couldn’t afford to stay in this expensive sport.

McLaren, Sauber and Williams are among the present teams that are on the verge of a crisis. Claire Williams admitted that budget cap might be the only thing that can save the team from completely shutting down. In case a team or two are forced to drop out, a budget cap will certainly make it easier for new teams to replace them.

Author’s take

Like every major change, a budget cap has its pros and cons, and it would be the most radical change the sport has seen in its 69-year history. But I strongly feel that regulating the sport to a very high level can result in fans eventually losing interest. Also, a $150 million budget cap is understandably low. There should be some kind of compensation given to top teams to remain on their winning track.

Although a budget cap is a good idea for Formula 1 to bring in, there should be a discussion within the owners’ circle and Liberty Media to make sure that there are no ill effects of this rule and that it can be implemented in the right way. As we have seen in many sports, implementation of new rules is key to how the sport develops.
