After falling further and further behind, Dale Earnhardt Sr. now leads Richard Petty in the NASCAR “GOAT” poll tiebreaker on the third day.

The championship round tiebreaker of the NASCAR “GOAT” poll between seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. began on our Facebook page at 6:00 a.m. ET on Monday, February 4, and it is scheduled to last until 6:00 a.m. ET on Monday, February 11.

This championship tiebreaker poll was created as a result of the fact that the original championship poll between these two drivers ended in a 448-448 tie.

This championship tiebreaker poll was created to last one week as opposed to just one day, which was the length of all of the other polls throughout the entire “GOAT” poll process, including not only the NASCAR polls but the Formula 1 and IndyCar polls as well, since 24 hours was not enough time to officially declare a winner even though 896 votes was the highest vote total among all of these polls.

"NASCAR: Greatest Driver of All-Time"CHAMPIONSHIP TIEBREAKER POLL

More from NASCAR Cup Series

After Petty, who entered the original 16-driver bracket as the #1 seed, opened up a sizable lead over Earnhardt, who entered this bracket as the #3 seed, on the first day of this poll and built on this lead on the second, it appeared as though he would be the winner even with several days remaining before this poll ends.

But Earnhardt has now surged to the lead after an extremely strong third day. Here is how he and Petty stack up against one another as far as total votes and percentages are concerned on the third day of this seven-day poll.

NOTE: These vote counts and percentages are accurate as of 8:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, February 6. Not all poll updates will be based on vote counts at this particular time of day.

Votes since last update (8:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, February 5): 855

Richard Petty: 131 votes (15.3%)
Dale Earnhardt: 724 votes (84.7%)

Total votes: 1,745

Richard Petty: 663 votes (38.0%)
Dale Earnhardt: 1,082 votes (62.0%)

After holding a 174-vote (19.6%) lead over Earnhardt in yesterday’s update, Petty now trails him by 419 votes (24.0%). Will he be able to overcome this deficit? Considering Earnhardt gained a total of 593 votes (43.6%) on him in one day, it is not too far-fetched to think that Petty could do the same. But it is also not too far-fetched to think that Earnhardt’s lead could continue to grow.
