Dale Earnhardt Sr. suddenly has a massive lead over Richard Petty in the NASCAR “GOAT” poll tiebreaker. Is there any hope for a comeback?

Two days after asking if there was any hope for seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt Sr. to come back and defeat fellow seven-time champion Richard Petty in the championship round tiebreaker of the NASCAR “GOAT” poll, it appears that a comeback is, in fact, unlikely.

However, as far as which driver needs to make a comeback, it is the other way around, as Earnhardt surged ahead of Petty yesterday and has continued to climb even further ahead. His lead over Petty is now far greater than what Petty’s lead over him was two days ago.

This tiebreaker, which began on our Facebook page at 6:00 a.m. ET on Monday, February 4 and is scheduled to last until 6:00 a.m. ET on Monday, February 11, was created as a result of the fact that the original championship poll between these two drivers, which was scheduled from 6:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, January 31 through 6:00 a.m. ET on Friday, February 1, ended in a 448-448 tie.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

However, based on how things look right now as far as total votes and percentages are concerned on the fourth day of this seven-day tiebreaker, you never would have guessed that this poll is only running because of the fact that a tie took place.

The votes are continuing to come in for Earnhardt at a rapid pace, and this pace is continuing to pick up, whereas the votes for Petty have become few and far between.

Here is how Petty and Earnhardt stack up against one another in terms of total votes and percentages at this point.

NOTE: These vote counts and percentages are accurate as of 6:35 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 7. Not all poll updates will be based on vote counts at this particular time of day.

Votes since last update (8:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, February 6): 3,355

Richard Petty: 357 votes (10.6%)
Dale Earnhardt: 2,998 votes (89.4%)

Total votes: 5,100

Richard Petty: 1,020 votes (20.0%)
Dale Earnhardt: 4,080 votes (80.0%)

To put it bluntly, it would take a miracle for Petty to come back and beat Earnhardt at this point.

Be sure to stay tuned for more updates about this NASCAR “GOAT” poll tiebreaker, and if you have not already done so, be sure to vote for either Richard Petty or Dale Earnhardt Sr. as the greatest NASCAR driver of all-time.
