Lucas di Grassi led the fourth race of the 2018-2019 Formula E season, the Mexico City ePrix, for only a few inches. But that was enough for him to win it.

Mahindra Racing’s Pascal Wehrlein took the pole position for the fourth race of the 13-race 2018-2019 Formula E season, the Mexico City ePrix, and he did not give up the lead at any point before the race’s 45-minute time limit expired.

But because of the fact that an additional lap had to be completed around the 18-turn, 1.300-mile (2.092-kilometer) Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course in Mexico City, Mexico after this time limit expired for the race to end, Wehrlein was cutting it close on his battery power.

With mere inches to go before the rookie crossed the finish line and took the checkered flag in his #94 Spark-Mahindra, he ran out of power and was passed by Audi Sports ABT Schaeffler’s Lucas di Grassi, who started the race in fourth place, in his #11 Spark-Audi. Di Grassi’s victory is his first of the season.

Wehrlein ended up being given a five-second time penalty for cutting a corned earlier in the lap, so he was ultimately relegated to a sixth place finish after running outside of the lead for only a fraction of a second throughout the entire race.

BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s Antonio Felix da Costa and Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara ended up rounding out the podium by finishing in second and third place in their #28 Spark-BMW and #48 Spark-Venturi, respectively. Di Grassi’s margin of victory over da Costa was 0.436 seconds.

Mahindra Racing’s Jerome d’Ambrosio and DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer rounded out the top five ahead of Wehrlein in sixth place by finishing in fourth and fifth in their #64 Spark-Mahindra and #36 Spark-DS Automobiles, respectively.

Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans, Venturi’s Felipe Massa, Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Daniel Abt rounded out the top 10 by finishing in seventh, eight, ninth and 10th place in their #20 Spark-Jaguar, #19 Spark-Venturi, #2 Spark-Audi and #66 Spark-Audi, respectively.

The race featured only one lead change, which took place when di Grassi passed Wehrlein just mere inches before crossing the finish line and taking the checkered flag. The race, which ended up being a 45-lap race, also featured a lengthy red flag period as a result of a massive crash that left the #3 Spark-Jaguar of Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Nelson Piquet Jr. severely damaged early on in the race.

A total of 22 drivers competed in the race, and Piquet Jr. ended up being the one of the three drivers who competed in it but failed to finish it. The other two were Nissan e.dams teammates Oliver Rowland and Sebastien Buemi, who ran out of battery power on the final lap.
