Cole Custer earned his first victory of the 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series season by winning the season’s fifth race, the Production Alliance Group 300, at Auto Club Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch has competed in just three of the first five races of the 33-race 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series. Entering the third of these three races, the Production Alliance Group 300, at Auto Club Speedway, he was undefeated, as he won the season’s third and fourth races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway, respectively.

But Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer prevented the 2015 Cup Series champion from going three for three to start the season and from earning what would have been a record-tying 200th win across the Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Truck Series.

Custer, who started the 150-lap race around the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) Auto Club Speedway oval in Fontana, California in third place in his #00 Ford, won it by 1.927 seconds over Busch, who finished in second in his #18 Toyota. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell finished in third in his #20 Toyota.

Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick, who started the race from the pole position, was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver. He finished in fourth place in his #2 Chevrolet. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five by finishing in fifth in his #98 Ford.

Team Penske’s Austin Cindric, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones, JR Motorsports’ teammates Ryan Preece and Justin Allgaier and Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #22 Ford, #19 Toyota, #8 Chevrolet, #7 Chevrolet and #11 Chevrolet, respectively.

The race featured a total of lead 13 changes among six drivers. Aside of Custer, who led 29 laps, five other drivers led at least one lap of the race. Those drivers were Busch, Bell, Reddick and JR Motorsports teammates Noah Gragson and Michael Annett. Busch, who won both stages one and two, led more laps than anybody else in the field with 98 laps led.

The race also featured a total of five caution flag periods for 28 laps. Of these caution flag periods, three took place as a result of on-track incidents while the other two took place as a result of the usual endings of stages one and two. Of the 37 drivers who started the race, 27 finished it and 16 finished it on the lead lap.
