Daniel Ricciardo has been penalized for backing into Daniil Kvyat during the fourth race of the 2019 Formula 1 season, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo has been issued a three-position grid penalty for the fifth race of the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season, the Spanish Grand Prix. This race is the next race on the schedule, and it is scheduled to take place in under two weeks.

Ricciardo was issued this three-position grid penalty as a result of the fact that he backed into Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat during the season’s fourth race, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

On lap 33 of the 51-lap race around the 20-turn, 3.73-mile (6.003-kilometer) Baku City Circuit temporary street circuit in Azadliq Square, Baku, Azerbaijan, Ricciardo attempted to pass Kvyat going into turn three on the inside (Kvyat’s left).

In his attempt to pass the 24-year-old Russian, the 29-year-old Australian locked up and went into the runoff area. Meanwhile, Kvyat had nowhere to go but the runoff area as a result of it.

At this point, Kvyat was turned to the left  and facing the barrier to the point where he was blocking Ricciardo from escaping the runoff area and getting back out onto the track.

Ricciardo proceeded to back up into Kvyat, causing damage to the cars of both drivers that ultimately resulted in both drivers being forced to retire from the race after they both had a chance to finish in the top 10 and score points.

Here is a video of this incident.

Here is what Ricciardo had to say about the incident, according to Sky Sports.

"“I don’t feel good about what happened. It’s weird. I saw a gap so thought I would have a go. Initially, I had the commitment and thought I would pull it off. But then I felt I would start to lock and missed the corner.“As soon as I went down the escape road it was a sense of urgency and a bit of panic, I guess, and just trying to minimize damage and lose as little time as possible. I found reverse and started going and had no idea he was there. I guess the urgency stopped me from looking.“When I went long, I assumed he would have cut back and stayed on track. Trying to minimize the mistake I made turned into another mistake.”"

ESPN2 is set to broadcast the Spanish Grand Prix live from Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmelo, Catalonia, Spain. This race, which is the fifth race on the 2019 Formula 1 schedule, is scheduled to begin at 9:10 a.m. ET on Sunday, May 12.
